First published in 1667, it was written ten years earlier by Milton and later transcribed for Milton as he went blind during the time of writing the book. the first edition only had ten books published and later in 1674 the second edition added two more books along with minor revisions to some dialogue.
Since then, numerous republications have added minor things such as biographies of Milton and have even published it with Paradise Regained, his later work that is tied to the same type of retelling of religious events.
