About the Author : John Milton

Born December 9th 1608, John Milton was born to John Milton Sr., a successful composer and scrivener, and his mother Sarah Jeffrey. Deeply influenced by his Puritan minister and tutor Thomas Young, Milton became highly educated in both education and religion. His early education was heavily geared toward religion by his mentors yet it is unknown if he actively pursued religious education as the records of St. Paul's Cathedral, the church he attended, were burned in a fire in the late 17th century. At this time he wrote his first poem "A Paraphrase on Psalm 114", which dealt with a father/ son relationship that is prevalent in later works such as Paradise Lost.
